You can use a long term technique for website promotion that keeps the search engines happy and helps you to build a major niche for yourself on the Internet. Using this technique works especially well for travel sites and find cheap flights sites but is effective for any tightly themed website.

The algorithms also frequently change if the search engines decide that too many folks are using what they consider to be deceptive practices in an effort to get better page ranking and placement on the results pages.
In my opinion, you are far better off to just keep building solid rich content websites and leave the website promotion by SEO stuff to those who enjoy the challenge of working with ever changing algorithms.
At it's best SEO is a game that is part art, part science, and part luck. At times it will work to your advantage --- for awhile. I just don't think it is a great way to build your long term web business as the rules for good website placement are constantly changing.
The use of PPC search engines just isn't as cost effective as it used to be. This also include Google Adwords. Not that you can't devise ad campaigns that will generate a ton of traffic. You can. However, as larger players with deep pockets and sometimes with little Internet savvy have entered the Internet advertising world the cost you pay for your keywords goes up and up and away.
You had better know what you are doing in the PPC world or you will cost yourself a lot of money in a big hurry.
Google is an especially interesting case in that the "Google Dance" can destroy your web traffic and business overnight. Google is a top notch search engine, no doubt about it. And they are constantly working to become better. Nothing wrong with that. In fact it is worthy of praise.
However, be aware that Google in their pursuit of excellence has the financial strength, engineering expertise, and IT firepower to constantly change their algorithms. And they frequently do so.
Many a webmaster has gotten out of bed one not so fine morning to find that their top ten search engine results pages for all of their important keywords have suddenly dropped completely out of sight. Welcome to the Google Dance.
Recently Google has decided to require that landing pages meet certain quality standards. This is somehow built into their algorithms. If Google decides that your landing pages, which might be getting great conversions, are not exactly what they are looking for the cost of your keywords may just skyrocket to the point that you can no longer afford them. Overnight your great performing landing pages can become almost worthless.
You can delete the keywords or you have to try to "optimize" your pages to bring the cost per keyword back into an affordable range. Good luck.
There is another serious problem by using PPC search engine traffic to build your business. When you stop advertising, guess what? Your traffic stops. Immediately. There is no residual long term benefit.

This brings us to what is in my opinion the very best way to build traffic and a long term viable profitable business on the Internet. You do need some skills and writing ability or have the resources necessary to generate good content. Nothing good on the net ever comes too easily or completely for free.
However, if you can follow a few not too hard steps you stand a very good chance of building a solid long term business.
One
You must have content rich websites that are all about one theme per domain. The theme ideally will be something you know a good bit about. Then you can write the copy in your own words and demonstrate to your visitors that you are an expert, or at least someone who has a good bit of knowledge about your niche subject, and that you have information to share that is worth knowing about.
Travel sites are especially good for website promotion in that there are just so many places you can travel to and give your own detailed information about your experiences and the lay of the land. People like to hear from people who have actually obtained first hand experience at just about anything.
Two
Once your website is up and running, and has at least 20 tightly related themed pages, start writing articles that relate to your website theme. These articles should not be blatant ads, that won't work at all. Rather they should be informative and present useful information in a direct friendly style that will be welcomed by your soon to be website visitors.
At the end of your article include a short bio box that includes a link back to your website. The reason for this will soon become obvious.

Now for the exciting part.
Once each article is in good shape ( correctly formated, no spelling errors, good grammar ) sign up with an article distribution service. This is an Internet service that supplies content to web publishers and who are always looking for new authors and content to distribute.
